Sonic the Hedgehog 3 Review

The ’90s dream lives on in Sonic the Hedgehog 3 2024, with Jim Carrey delivering not one but two deliciously quirky performances that recall his raw comedy greatness 30 years ago. Nostalgic for the slapstick antics of “Dumb and Dumber”? Here, Robotnik and Robotnik are in. You can watch this movie on Flix free movies.

Carrey reprises his role as the villainous mastermind from the previous two “Sonic” movies, and he also plays Dr. Gerald Robotnik, Ivo Robotnik’s equally evil grandfather. Both are loquacious and sport elaborate mustaches. And the moment these long-lost relatives are reunited is a fourth-wall-breaking moment beyond anything seen in this week’s Mufasa: The Lion King.

In theory, Sonic is the reason you’re here. Ben Schwartz again lends his voice to Sonic with his quick-witted attitude and cocky attitude. But in this breezy third film from director Jeff Fowler, he’s constantly in the shadow of his co-star. Alongside Carrey, Keanu Reeves brings his signature quiet intensity to the role of Shadow. Imagine John Wick as an all-powerful, evil space hedgehog and you’ll understand how seriously Reeves took this assignment. Wow.

All of this is to say that Sonic the Hedgehog 3 is far better than it has any right to be, both as a video game adaptation, as a sequel to the third season, and as a family movie coming out right before Christmas. Personally, I’m not a fan of Sega’s video games — I’ve never played one in my life — but that’s not a prerequisite for enjoying it here.

Sonic 3 takes a long time to start up and is very cheesy from the get-go. And the script by returning writers Pat Casey & Josh Miller and Josh Whittington is laced with too many insults to adolescents and pop culture references. But for many, this is a feature, not a bug. That’s the Sonic way.

Once Carey’s frenetic performance kicks in, he takes the film to some incredibly strange places that make it appeal as much to adult audiences as to the little kids he drags there.

At the beginning of the film, the red-striped Shadow escapes from the prison island where he’s been held for the past 50 years and seeks revenge. Sonic, Knuckles and the feisty Tails live a quiet life with Tom and his wife Maddie in the small town of Green Hills, Montana. Apart from Carey’s character, we don’t need more people this time around than ever before.

But the furry space creatures must act immediately to stop this fearsome foe, and the former rivals realize that it’s only possible by working together. To do so, they must hunt down the greatest McGuffin of all: the MacGuffin, which Robotniks also want to use as fuel for a gigantic weapon of destruction. It all seems so silly until a real risk unexpectedly arises.
